Early Life in Hanoi’s “Coupon Era”
I was born after the Vietnam War and grew up during the subsidized era – the so-called “coupon era” – before Vietnam opened its doors to the world. My childhood was filled with memories of Russian-style apartments, narrow back alleys barely wide enough for two people, and the “black market” that was part of daily life.
Living through four distinct seasons in Hanoi, each with its own colors and atmosphere, shaped my deep connection with the city. These experiences inspired my passion for culture, people, and the authentic soul of Vietnam.
From Lecturer to Tourism
Before entering the tourism industry, I worked as a lecturer at the National Academy of Public Administration for seven years. Although it was a stable and prestigious career, my passion for travel, culture, and Vietnamese cuisine led me to make a bold decision: to leave academia and start again in a completely new field.
The biggest challenge at the beginning was foreign language skills. To overcome this, I started working as a bellman in a hotel, practicing English every day while assisting international guests. From handling luggage to helping at the front desk, I gradually built my foundation in hospitality.
Becoming a Tour Guide
My turning point came when I was offered a position as a transfer guide. This opportunity sparked my love for guiding, and soon I became a full-time tour guide, leading groups across Vietnam from North to South.
The smiles, gratitude, and happiness I received from both locals and travelers deepened my love for cultural exchange. Every trip was not only about sightseeing but about sharing stories, history, and authentic experiences.
Founding Vietnam Backstreet Tours
With years of experience and an unshakable passion, I decided to establish Vietnam Backstreet Tours, a travel company dedicated to creating authentic Hanoi tours and off-the-beaten-path experiences in Vietnam.
My vision has always been clear: to show travelers the real Vietnam – not only its famous landmarks, but also its hidden alleys, vibrant street food, countryside charm, and warm-hearted people.
Vision and Today
Today, as CEO of Vietnam Backstreet Tours, I continue to lead with the same spirit of resilience, hospitality, and curiosity that carried me from the “coupon era” of my childhood to a life dedicated to travel.
Our mission is to design immersive cultural journeys, where travelers can feel the soul of Vietnam through its history, cuisine, and everyday life. With every tour, we aim to create memories that last a lifetime.
